สาระน่ารู้เกี่ยวกับเหล็ก ความแตกต่างระหว่างแร่เหล็ก เหล็กดิบและเหล็กกล้า ทุกวันนี้ คนเรามีความเกี่ยวข้องกับเหล็กอยู่ตลอดเวลา แต่หลายท่านก็ยังคงไม่ทราบ ความแตกต่างระหว่างเหล็กดิบและเหล็กกล้า ดังนั้น เราจึงได้หาคำจำกัดความที่จะ ทำให้ทุกท่านรู้จักเหล็กกันมากขึ้น เหล็กดิบ (Pig iron) เหล็กดิบเป็นผลผลิต ที่ได้มาจากเตาสูง หรือเรียกว่า เตาบลาสต์เฟอร์เนซ (Blast Furnace) โดยการถลุงสินแร่เหล็ก ซึ่งความร้อนที่ใช้ในการถลุงนั้นได้มาจากการ เผาไหม้ของถ่านโค้ก (Coke) โดยมีลมร้อนเป็นสิ่งที่ช่วยในการเผาไหม้ เพื่อให้ได้ อุณหภูมิที่สูงยิ่งขึ้น โดยให้ความร้อนได้สูงถึง 3000 °F หรือประมาณ 1649 °C ซึ่งในระดับอุณหภูมิดังกล่าวนี้ สามารถหลอมละลายสินแร่ต่าง ๆ ได้ สิ่งสำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งก็คือ ในกระบวนการหลอมละลายสินแร่เหล็กด้วยเตาสูงนั้น จะมีสิ่งสกปรกเกิดขึ้น หรือเรียกกันว่า สแลก (Slag) ซึ่งเราต้องกำจัดออกจากน้ำโลหะ ก่อนนำโลหะนั้นไปเทลงแบบหล่อเหล็ก เพื่อให้ได้เป็นเหล็กดิบออกมา สำหรับวัตถุดิบ ที่ใช้ถลุงเหล็กดิบนั้น ได้แก่ สินแร่เหล็ก หินปูน ถ่านโค้ก และเหล็กใช้ซ้ำ เหล็กกล้า (Steel ) เหล็กดิบที่ได้จากเตาถลุงนั้นจะมีปริมาณของธาตุมลทินอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก ซึ่งจะมี ความเปราะ และไม่สามารถจะนำไปใช้ประโยชน์อะไรได้ โดยจะต้องนำมาผ่านกระบวนการที่สำคัญอีกครั้งหนึ่ง เพื่อที่จะลดปริมาณของธาตุมลทินลง และเพื่อให้ได้ ส่วนผสมตามต้องการ ซึ่งกระบวนการเหล่านี้เราเรียกว่า การรีไฟน์ (Refining) ซึ่งการรีไฟน์เหล็กก็คือ การผลิตเหล็กกล้านั่นเอง ดังนั้น เหล็กกล้า ก็คือ เหล็กเจือคาร์บอนสูงสุดไม่เกินร้อยละ 1.7 สามารถทุบขึ้นรูปได้ ที่อุณหภูมิระหว่าง 800 – 1000 องศาเซลเซียส โดยไม่ต้องผ่านกรรมวิธีอื่นใดอีก จากความรู้เบื้องต้น เราสามารถสรุปได้ว่า เหล็กแผ่นรีดร้อน ถือเป็นเหล็กกล้า ชนิดหนึ่ง เพราะในการผลิตเหล็กแผ่นรีดร้อนนั้น จะต้องผ่านกรรมวิธีเพิ่มสาร อื่นๆ เข้าไป เพื่อปรับปรุงคุณสมบัติของเหล็กให้ดีขึ้น
